shebaduhkitty: Poverty and Art

***cross-posted to teaching comms***

I am wondering how many of you work in HIGH POVERTY inner city schools. I am really excited about teaching art next year, but the demographics of this school will also be a new challenge. 60% Free-reduced lunch. HIGH level of non-readers. ESL (ELL) also with self-containted SPED and EBD.

I am thinking of starting a SUB-group for people teaching art with these types of issues, but need to know how many art out there. I am looking for the support for the unique issues of teaching art in this type of school will present.

Let me know if you would like to discuss these types of issues here or on a specialized group??

The idea of teaching in an environment like that sounds challenging. Having attended a school like that myself when I was younger (we all got free lunch because most were below the poverty level). I think teaching art will be wonderful because there is no basic language for art. While it might be harder to communicate with some students I really feel that art is a great way to cross language barriers and other boundaries.
Good luck!
